France, fear of Islamic extremism returns: a man stabs a policewoman. He was known for his radical positions

PARIS – A policewoman was seriously injured in a knife attack by a man who investigators reported, had entered in the file of Islamists at risk of radicalization. It happened near Nantes, in La Chapelle-sur-Edre. The man later shot and wounded two other policemen.

The stabber, Ndiaga Dieye, died from gunshot wounds sustained during the fight. From the first elements it appears that the man, who was about 40 years old, suffered from mental disorders.

After a brief escape, he was stopped by the agents: the firefight resulted in his death. The French Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, went to La Chapelle-sur-Edre, after the stabbing of the policewoman, who does not appear to be in danger of life.

The assailant was released a few months ago from prison where he radicalized to Islam, after serving a prison sentence of several years for various common crimes. In prison he was diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder due to schizophrenia. Its radicalization was known due to the rigorous practice of Islam and religious-themed verbal provocations. He was registered in the FSpRT, dossier of reports for the prevention of terrorist radicalization.

Dieye, born in November 1981 in Saint Nazaire, was known to the police for many crimes committed as a teenager. In prison he had been reported for several assaults on guards and cellmates.
