The head of the jihadist group “Islamic State of the Great Sahara” (Eigs, the acronym in French), Adnan Abou Walid al-Sahraoui, was killed by French forces. This was announced by President Emmanuel Macro on Twitter. “This is another great success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel,” added the head of state.

Eigs is considered to be responsible for most of the attacks in the area straddling the borders between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.

“The Nation tonight thinks of all its heroes who died for France in the Sahel in the Serval and Barkhane operations, of the bereaved families, of all its wounded. Their sacrifice is not in vain. With our African, European and American partners , we will continue this battle, “Macron continued.

The French Defense Minister Florence Parly explained that the number one of Daesh in the Sahel “died following an attack by the forces” of the Barkhane operation. “I congratulate the military and intelligence agents who contributed to this long hunt. It is a decisive blow against this terrorist group. Our fight continues,” the minister added on Twitter.
