French singer Kendji Girac hospitalized after gunshot wound – rts.ch

Successful French singer Kendji Girac was shot in the chest Monday morning in circumstances that are still unclear, before being hospitalized near Bordeaux (southwest of France). The shooting weapon was found and “is being analyzed”, the Mont-de-Marsan prosecutor’s office said in the evening.

Around 5:30 a.m. Monday, the gendarmes were called to the travel area in Biscarrosse (Landes), for a man seriously injured by a gunshot to the chest.

Conflicting information

The victim, Kendji Girac, whose vital prognosis was initially announced as serious, according to initial sources close to the case, was immediately transported to hospital in Bordeaux. But other sources close to the investigation and the Landes firefighters indicated later in the morning that the singer had never been between life and death.

He was conscious at the time of his transport, according to the firefighters, who spoke of “a serious wound”.

The singer was still hospitalized Monday evening.

According to information from BFMTV, shots were exchanged during the night from Sunday to Monday in this crossing area. A bullet then hit Kendji Girac in circumstances which remain unclear. The singer had been present in Biscarrosse for several days, specifies a source close to the town hall.

“The events took place within the Traveler community, within a camp, at the reception area,” she said. This area located on the D652 departmental road, on the Parentis-en-Born road, is not known for recent incidents of violence, according to this same source.

According to The Parisianwhen the police arrived on site, they first found themselves faced with around twenty people who claimed that nothing had happened and who refused to say more.

A domestic accident?

The 27-year-old singer, who promoted the identity of the gypsy community from which he comes, would have told the emergency services that he had bought the weapon, a Colt 45, in a flea market and had injured himself while handling it, declared to AFP a source close to the matter.

A weapon of the same model was found without a magazine in a bush near the reception area, another close source said.

At this stage, no leads have been ruled out, said a source close to the investigations, without giving details on the circumstances of these facts. The Mont-de-Marsan public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation “under the classification of attempted voluntary homicide”.

“It’s not a settling of scores, it’s an accident. He played with the thing and bam,” Emilio, a sixty-year-old who introduces himself as his uncle, told AFP.

“We were playing guitar, peacefully. An accident can happen anytime, at any hour,” he adds, recalling an evening the day before.

Winner of “The Voice”

Originally from Périgueux in Dordogne, Kendji Maillé, his real name, was born into a family of Catalan gypsy origin 27 years ago.

He was made famous “a little by accident”, in his words, when in August 2013 his uncle published a video in which he covers Gims’ hit, “Bella”, on the guitar.

He then won the show “The Voice” and sold millions of records, driven in particular by his hits “Color Gitano” and “Andalouse”, seen hundreds of millions of times on YouTube.
