NEW YORK — On the podium, behind Eric Adams, 61, the new African American mayor of New York, was a Pakistani woman with a turban, an elegant Korean lady dressed in red, a smiling, bulky Hispanic-American; two black women, two white men and two very serious Hassidim, in dark overcoats, who came from the depths of the Jewish neighborhoods of Brooklyn to celebrate the victory.
