G20, the French economy minister: “No zero emissions in 2050 without nuclear power”

by admin

The G20 opens with the climate issue at the center: «I will be very frank with you, I am talking about nuclear energy to all my European counterparts, I talked about it with Giorgetti this morning. I am convinced that we will not succeed in the climate transition without nuclear power and that we will not be able to reach the zero emissions goal by 2050 without nuclear power “. This was stated by the French Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, upon his arrival at the Finance and Health summit, which opens the proceedings of the conference of large industrialized countries. “There are states – he explains – that have a nuclear tradition like France. With President Macron we are determined to develop the supply chain and invest in new nuclear power. The balance between renewables and nuclear power will allow us to reach carbon neutrality in 2050. We will continue to strongly demand that nuclear power be recognized as clean energy in Europe ”.
France is one of the countries that most strongly in the EU supports the equation of nuclear energy with renewable sources, considering it necessary to mitigate the costs of the energy transition.

Biden-Bergoglio interview concluded

The conversation between Pope Francis and US President Joe Biden lasted 90 minutes. To draw up a ranking, it is the longest conversation between a pontiff and the last American presidents. Bergoglio also had talked with Barack Obama for 50 minutes, and for half an hour with Donald Trump (at the end dark faces in the final photo). Benedict XVI, on the other hand, had talked for an hour with George W. Bush.

The vaccines
The second point at the center of the debate is the issue of vaccination in middle and low-income countries. Theme addressed by the director of the International Monetary Fund Kristalina Georgieva, referring to the commitments of the G20 in financing the campaign: «There is only 20 billion dollars left to accelerate global vaccinations so as to reach 70% of the population by mid-2022. We need it to people’s health but also for the world economy. Spending just 20 billion now, we will have earned 5,300 billion in 2025 ”.
Georgieva calls for “courageous” and joint action on three fronts: putting an end to the pandemic also by sharing vaccines; help developing countries by speeding up the implementation of debt resolution; and a commitment to a package of measures to achieve the net zero emissions target by mid-century.
