Germany: Cdu / Csu, Ralph Brinkhaus confirmed as group leader

by admin

In the end, the compromise prevailed: the deputies of the CDU / CSU group in the Bundestag accepted the mediation proposed by Armin Laschet and Markus Söder, head of the Bavarian Christian-social workers: the outgoing Ralph Brinkhaus was re-elected group leader, but only for six months , that is until April 2022, collecting 164 votes in favor and two abstentions. There were no other nominations: there was talk of Jens Spahn, Norbert Roettgen and Friedrich Merz. The Christian / Social leader had proposed that Brinkhaus remain president of the CDU / CSU MPs only for a transitional phase. This is a crucial question: if a “traffic light” coalition with Spd, Verdi and Liberals were to take hold, the president of the CDU / Csu group would be de facto the leader of the opposition to the Bundestag, so much so that this role is usually assumed by the party leader. Hence Laschet’s request to “freeze” re-election and postpone it as much as possible

Already yesterday Brinkhaus had received the support of Söder and above all of Laschet, on whose shoulders the poor electoral result weighs and whose resignations are beginning to be requested within the same CDU / CSU. And if the party goes to the opposition, Brinkhaus’s role will become fundamental. Too much, waiting to know future developments and to understand what will be the coalition that will lead Germany: the appointment, in fact, will only be valid for six months. «A good compromise», as MP Marian Wendt defined it, «with which Armin Laschet brought home” a success “, reducing the pressure on himself.
