BERLIN – Friedrich Merz is the new president of the CDU. The virtual congress of German conservatives voted him with an overwhelming 94.62% of the vote. In his speech to the delegates, Merz recalled the “heavy defeat in the elections” of 2021 and promised a “robust signal of renewal”. But he also added that the divisions of the electoral campaign must not be repeated and that “we must not delude ourselves”: the return to the government of the country “could be a long road”.
