Angela Merkel went to the press for a brief but explosive statement. A mea culpa never seen. No Easter squeeze, said the chancellor: “I apologize to the citizens, the ‘Easter rest’ was a mistake, there were good reasons to decide but in such a short time it was not feasible”. The unprecedented lockdown from 1 to 5 April decided by Merkel with the governors just two days ago, after a twelve-hour brawl, will not happen.
Merkel hinted that it was too complicated to add two days of rest, it was unclear whether they should be considered as days of celebration. But the reverse comes after a new storm that hit the government after the news of a new total freezing of public life. For the rest, the Chancellor remains of the idea that the priority must be to break the third wave of the pandemic now almost entirely attributable “to the British variant, more contagious and deadly”.
