Giant blunder sent Bayer Leverkusen into a huge lead

(Bayer Leverkusen – Mainz 2–1) Whoops. He was only supposed to take a single shot in a firm grip. But Mainz goalkeeper Robert Zentner had Zalo on his gloves.

The shot from Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich went in an arc, over the unfortunate goalkeeper.

And into the goal.

It could be reminiscent of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius’ blunder in the Champions League final against Real Madrid in 2018.

Andrich’s finish from 31 meters was measured at 104 km/h, but should of course never have hit the target. But it extended Leverkusen’s gap to Bayern Munich to 11 points at the top of the Bundesliga table.

The crisis-stricken big club meets RB Leipzig at home in Munich on Saturday – and desperately needs a win after three straight losses in the series and the Champions League.

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen have not impressed since Bayern Munich were beaten 3-0 in their last home game, but the win over Mainz is the 23rd game in the Bundesliga without defeat.

In total, in all competitions, Leverkusen are unbeaten in 33 games this season.

Granit Xhaka gave Leverkusen a dream start. The former Arsenal player squeezed the ball into the goal after just two minutes. The shot dipped into the far corner from an angle.

In the cheer, he simulated injury. Several of the fellow players threw themselves in with the same movements. It set the BayArena on fire.

But the downturn came quickly.

Dominik Kohr equalized with a header just four minutes later.

But the Mainz goalkeeper’s blunder in the 2nd half still turned Friday night into a party in Leverkusen.
