Greece, earthquake measuring 6.1 in Crete

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale was recorded on the island of Crete, at a depth of 13 kilometers. The quake occurred 16 kilometers off the coast of Heraklion, the most important city on the island.

The earthquake, according to what was communicated by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv) which recorded its magnitude, occurred at 08.17 Italian time.

A witness in Heraklion, quoted by the Independent, stated that a school was evacuated following the quake, while another said that the buildings shook. One person died. The Greek TV Ert reports it. It is a worker who was carrying out work inside a church in Arkalochori whose roof collapsed after the earthquake.

The Minister of Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, has already arrived on the spot. Firefighters described the situation as “very difficult”, there are at least three people trapped inside their homes.
