A fine of 100 euros per month for people over 60 who refuse to be vaccinated against Covid. This is the measure announced in Greece by the prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to incentivize the population to immunize themselves against the virus, also in light of the fears raised by the new omicron variant. As reported by the Ekathimerini website, about 520,000 people over 60 in Greece are still not vaccinated. The fine will be imposed automatically by the independent public revenue authority. During a press conference, Mitsotakis stressed that the government’s alert is high for the new variant, although no cases of omicron have been detected in Greece so far. Funds raised from the fines will be donated to Greek hospitals fighting the pandemic. “It’s not a punishment,” said Mitsotakis, “I’d say it’s a health tax.”
At the moment about 63% of the Greek population is vaccinated, although appointments for vaccines have increased in recent weeks.
