Guatemala: new eruption of Fuego, “a river of lava”

by admin

The Fuego volcano in Guatemala has started a new strong eruptive phase, emitting lava and ash in a series of explosions which – according to local authorities – do not yet make it necessary to evacuate the areas below.

The activity produced “a long river of lava at the base of the volcano, about 35 kilometers southwest of Guatemala City”, said Emilio Barillas of the Insivumeh Institute. “The activity that is taking place at the moment corresponds to the beginning of an eruption of a Strombolian nature”, explained Barillas.

Fuego, 3,700 meters high, is one of the three active volcanoes in Guatemala.

The activity is the strongest since June 2018, when Fuego unleashed a torrent of mud and ash, erasing the village of San Miguel Los Lotes from the maps. More than 200 people lost their lives.
