After a cruel miss from Coventry, it was finally Rasmus Højlund who scored the decisive penalty, saving the Reds.

Now Manchester United will go to the final of the FA Cup against rival Manchester City, and kept alive the dream of a trophy this season.

Still, there were no big celebrations.

– Usually you see a stream of red suits throwing themselves at the referee. Instead, they almost stand perplexed and thank for the match, says Viaplay expert Tor Ole Skullerud.

– The players did not cheer wildly because they were lucky to win. They were almost embarrassed to win in the end, says former Manchester United hero Roy Keane on ITV

– The standards in this club are much higher than what we have delivered, admits captain Bruno Fernandes to the same channel.

RED JUBILEE: Manchester United took the lead early on.

DECIDED?: Bruno Fernandes celebrates the 3-0 goal. Then most people thought it was all over.

HOPE IS LIGHT: Then Coventry scored, and that boosted the light blues.

OVERTIME GOAL: Four minutes into overtime it was 3-3.

CONTRASTS: The match went to extra time.

ECSTASY: Victor Torp scored there (lying down) and the whole team threw themselves at him.

CANCELED: But the goal was disallowed after a marginal offside.

PENALTY: Manchester United missed their first penalty.

BOM: But Coventry also missed. They burned two penalties…

WINNING GOAL: Rasmus Højlund scored on his last penalty and sent Manchester United to the final.

The big shock came just over half an hour before the penalty shootout. Manchester United had unbelievably squandered a 3-0 lead against Coventry, from the second tier in England.

Four minutes into overtime they completed the incredible recovery. Haji Wright easily scored a penalty, leveling the score at 3–3.

– This is a completely crazy turn of a football match. It was over. There was never any way back into this. Coventry found it anyway. It’s completely crazy, said Viaplay’s commentator Kasper Wikestad.

– This is one of the craziest things I have ever been a part of. Huttemegtu, what a turnaround, said his expert colleague Tor Ole Skullerud.

Butchered by experts

Television images showed stunned Manchester United players who could not believe what they were seeing on the pitch in front of them.

Then the pictures cut to a resigned Erik ten Hag in the manager’s chair on the bench, with the air knocked out of him.

– I can’t believe what I see. You are looking for leadership, but it is not there. I do not know what to say. Shocking. Manchester United looked like a team in the second highest level, Keane believes at ITV.

– Every time I see this United team, I don’t like what I see. They are hard to like, he followed up after the match.

Because after an hour of play in the match, everything went smoothly for the former giant. Manchester United swept over little Coventry, and when captain Bruno Fernandes scored 3-0 just before 60 minutes had passed, more supporters probably started booking a train trip to London to watch the FA Cup final in May.

But with 20 minutes left to play, Manchester United rallied – once again.

THREAT: Erik ten Hag frantically tries to get his message across to the players during the match. Experts believe his job was at stake.

I think the job was at stake

Most people with a heart in Manchester United probably still had a resting pulse when Ellis Reco Simms reduced it to 3–1. Then Callum O`Hare made it 3-2 ten minutes later, and suddenly it was a game again.

Well into the extra time, Aaron Wan-Bissaka handled in his own box, and gifted Coventry a penalty kick. The teams thus went to extra time, in what Viaplay’s commentator described as one of the biggest comebacks in FA Cup history.

The aforementioned Keane believed ten Hag’s job was at stake through extra innings and penalties.

– You worry about ten Hag if they are unable to progress here, said Keane.

In overtime of the last extra period, former Sarpsborg 08 player Victor Torp scored, and the roof lifted at Wembley. All of Coventry thought they were set for a sensational final, but it was called off for an offside that could have been barely bigger than a grain of sand.

Or as Coventry coach Mark Robins described it – a toenail in the difference between final and exit.

Thus ended the hope.

DISSATISFACTION: Some supporters were clear in their displeasure with the Manchester United players.
