Mary Pili Hernández: Four decades in the media and never afraid to speak out

After 40 years in the media industry, journalist Mary Pili Hernández has never shied away from expressing herself. However, in a recent personal message on her social media account, she revealed that her silence was not due to a lack of indignation, but rather out of fear.

Hernández’s message comes in light of the recent repressive actions taken by the ruling party in Venezuela against human rights defenders. The detention of activist Rocío San Miguel, president of Citizen Control, has put members of different unions and those who denounce human rights violations by the government on high alert.

San Miguel was arbitrarily detained at the Maiquetía International Airport and is currently held at the headquarters of the Intelligence Service (SEBIN) in El Helicoide. The detention was linked to an alleged assassination attempt plot against a leader of the Chavismo movement.

Hernández’s personal message serves as a powerful reminder of the fear and intimidation faced by those who speak out against injustice and human rights violations. Despite her decades-long career in the media, Hernández’s admission highlights the very real dangers that journalists and activists continue to face in their fight for justice and freedom of expression.
