by admin

Volcanic eruption about 40 kilometers from the capital ofIceland, Reykjavik. This was reported by the Icelandic Meteorological Office. A red cloud lights up the dark sky and a no-fly has been set up in the area.

The Krysuvik volcanic system is located south of Mount Fagradalsfjall, on the Reykjanes peninsula, in the southwest of the country.

“The volcanic eruption started in Fagradalsfjall. The code is red, but the seismometers show very little turbulence,” tweeted the national meteorological agency. A few kilometers away is the Keflavik International Airport and the small fishing port of Grindavik, but the area is uninhabited and the eruption is not expected to cause any danger. The Krysuvik volcanic system has been in existence for 900 years, while the last eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula dates back to almost 800 years ago, in 1240. But on February 24, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded on the outskirts of Reykjavik, followed by more than 50,000 minor tremors, the highest number since digital recordings began in 1991.
