The announcement of the death of the head of the Islamic State, Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, after only eight months, is yet another sign of the crisis of the terrorist group in its homeland. The predecessor of Abu al-Hasan, Abu Ibrahim, had lasted twenty-eight months. Before him Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi – the leader who first proclaimed himself Caliph from the pulpit of the Grand al Nuri mosque in Mosul, Iraq – had managed to resist for nine years and this is a sign of how much conditions are changing.
