AMARI (Estonia) – In code they call it “alpha-scramble”: the siren interrupts the life of the base, two pilots run on the fighters and leave in a few minutes to intercept the intruding planes. It is not an exercise. The men at the controls don’t know what awaits them. They touch the sound barrier until the point on the radar screen becomes visible and turns into a silhouette: a bomber, a reconnaissance or a freighter but always Russian.
