In Europe, 80 per cent of adults are vaccinated with two doses. Italy is an excellence, major delays in Bulgaria and Romania

The European adult population vaccinated against Covid is growing, and reaches thresholds such as to spread satisfaction in the EU. EU citizens and adult residents continue to use the various anti-coronavirus serums authorized by the European Medicines Agency (Ema). With today, January 7, the threshold of 80 percent of those who are at least 18 years of age to have received two injections is reached. “Another milestone achieved” in the fight against the virus, comments the Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakide, in commenting on the latest updates provided by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (Ecdc).

Translated into figures, there are over 296.5 million adults protected with double dose throughout the Union, in addition to another 312 million people with at least 18 years of age who received the first administration (84.4% of the total). Encouraging data, which induce the community executive to renew appeals to speed up national vaccination campaigns. “Continue with vaccinations and boosters” is Kyriakides’ invitation, valid for everyone but even more so for those countries still far behind.

This is the case in Bulgaria and Romania, where delays are evident. In Bulgaria only 33.2% of the population considered to be adults (adults, in fact) received a double dose, and while the index of protected with one dose only reached 34.1% of all 18-year-olds and over. Different but still low numbers also for Romania, where there is a 49.3% single dose and 48.5% double dose performed.

In this monitoring Italy stands out for its example of excellence: 89.7% of adults with one inoculated dose, and 83.6% of double doses. Both indices are above the Community average. In response to the pandemic, net of pockets of no-vax resistance, the country therefore confirms itself as a model.
