[See China News on August 11, 2021]CanadaAmbassador to China Dominic Barton said on Tuesday,ChinaThe authorities are inMeng WanzhouIt is no coincidence that Schellenberg’s death sentence was upheld during the formal trial of the extradition case. In order to save Meng Wanzhou, Beijing did not hesitate to sacrifice the death penalty to put pressure on it, but the cold-blooded and inhumane precision calculations angered Canada. The foreign minister also condemned the verdict as “cruel and inhumane.” A recent poll conducted during the Olympics has shown that most Canadians support a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics because they dislike Beijing.

As we all know, the fate of three Canadians was implicated in the Meng Wanzhou case. Among them, the Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was suspected of drug smuggling, which had nothing to do with the Meng Wanzhou case but became a hostage in Beijing’s hands. Schellenberg was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Liaoning court in China in November 2018. He refused to accept the sentence and appealed. But shortly afterwards, on December 1, 2018, Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of China’s Huawei, was arrested at Vancouver Airport. In retaliation for Canada’s arrest of Meng Wanzhou and preventing his extradition to the United States, Beijing quickly responded by arresting former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor on suspicion of endangering China’s national security. In January 2019, Schellenberg’s 15-year sentence was commuted to the death sentence in a one-day trial. The speed is shocking.

Bilateral relations between Canada and China have plummeted since then and have not returned to normal. Just before the final round of hearings on the extradition case of Meng Wanzhou was scheduled to end on August 20 this year, Beijing once again took action and announced the rejection of the appeal of Canadian Schellenberg’s death sentence and reported it to the Supreme People’s Court for approval.

Should Canadian Schellenberg’s crime be sentenced to death? It is a legal issue and will not be discussed here. But anyone with a discerning eye can see that in order to save Meng Wanzhou from being extradited to the United States, the Chinese government did not hesitate to use the life of another Canadian who has nothing to do with Meng Wanzhou as a means of pressure. This is beyond the control of national politics. The general hostage diplomacy category is more cruel.

After the “High People’s Court” of China’s Liaoning Province announced on Tuesday that it upheld Schellenberg’s death sentence, the Canadian Ambassador to China Bao Damin immediately stated that the retrial of Schellenberg’s case in 2019 was arbitrary and his death sentence was “cruel”. Inhumane and inhuman punishment”. He said that it is no coincidence that the Chinese authorities announced that Schellenberg’s death sentence was upheld during the formal trial of Meng Wanzhou’s extradition case. Canada is also deeply concerned about China’s arbitrary use of the death penalty. “We condemn this sentence in the strongest terms.” Bao Damin also said: “Obviously there is still a long way to go, but this is by no means the end.” He revealed that he had a conversation with Schellenberg after the court pronounced the verdict. , Schellenberg was “very calm.”

According to the official Weibo of the Canadian Embassy in China, Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau also issued a statement on Tuesday, strongly condemning the decision of the Chinese judiciary to maintain the death sentence against Schellenberg. The statement stated that Canada has repeatedly expressed to China its firm opposition to this cruel and inhuman punishment and will continue to negotiate with the Chinese authorities. “In any case, we are opposed to the death penalty. We condemn the arbitrary punishment of Mr. Schellenberg.”

Canadian opposition and Conservative party leader Erin O’Toole urged the Liberal government to be tougher on the CCP. He condemned Beijing for “planning to kill a Canadian for political reasons.” He also suggested that athletes boycott the Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing next year.

In addition to the Schellenberg case, the CCP also arrested former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor after Meng Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian authorities. Before arresting the two men, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs first summoned Canada and the US ambassador to China urgently, demanding that Canada immediately release Meng Wanzhou, and threatened that “otherwise it will cause serious consequences.” The CCP also requested the United States to immediately revoke the arrest warrant.

Kang Mingkai and Spavo were detained in China on charges of espionage. They were tried in March and are still awaiting verdict.

Unlike the three Canadian citizens accused of crimes by China, the treatment that Meng Wanzhou enjoyed during the extradition case can be described as “luxury”, which fully demonstrates the humane nature of Canadian justice. In January 2019, the US Department of Justice announced an indictment against Huawei and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, for bank fraud and violation of US sanctions against Iran. After more than two years of preliminary trial in court, the formal trial of Meng Wanzhou’s extradition case will be held in Vancouver, Canada this month. On August 4th and 5th, the last round of hearings on the Meng Wanzhou case was held in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. The prosecution and defense’s final debates attracted international attention, and the court was full on the first day of the hearing. The final round of hearings is expected to end on August 20, and the judge will make a final ruling on whether to extradite the United States in the fall.

On the same day that the Tokyo Olympics closed, Canada’s largest private television network CTV announced a new poll showing that most Canadians support boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics. During the Tokyo Olympics, a poll of about 1,000 Canadians put forward the questionnaire that China’s detention of Canadians and Canada’s restriction on the departure of an executive from China’s Huawei led to tensions between China and Canada. Should Canada boycott the Winter Olympics next year? 45% of the respondents said they support boycotting the Winter Olympics, another 19% said they support the boycott to some extent, 15% of the respondents said they oppose boycotting the Winter Olympics, and 14% said they are in some way. To the extent it is opposed to doing so.

Two days after the Tokyo Olympics closed, how did ordinary Canadians feel about the new threat from Beijing? Worthy of attention.
