India, the “black mushroom” that devours Covid patients

CHENNAI. Nosebleed, swollen eye, drooping eyelid, blurred vision. And then a few dark patches around the nose, indicating necrosis. This is how the black fungus pandemic which is taking advantage of the lowered immune defenses in Covid-19 patients, alarming an India already struggling with the spread of the coronavirus. Unfortunately, patients are often hospitalized when it is late, the vision is already blurred, the injections of the antifungal amphotericin B are not enough and the only intervention left is that of removing the eye and in some cases, more rare, even jaw bone, the only way to prevent the fungus from reaching the brain.
