On the evening of the 20th, Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced the extension of the emergency restrictions for 5 days. Joko said this was a “very difficult decision.” In order to slow the epidemic, the government had to make such a decision.

Joko said that since the implementation of emergency restrictions on social activities, the number of new cases and the occupancy rate of hospital beds “have fallen.” He said that if the number of new cases per day continues to decline, emergency restrictions will be “opened in phases” starting on the 26th of this month.

Joko said that he has instructed relevant cabinet ministers to issue social assistance as soon as possible to individuals, families and businesses that are affected by the emergency restrictions and who are eligible to receive social assistance. The social assistance includes cash assistance, rice and other necessities assistance, network tariffs and electricity subsidies.

According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs, 18.9 million households and millions of small and micro enterprises in the country will receive social assistance.
