NU version of the 2024 Ramadan Fasting Schedule

Quoted from detikHikmah, the Falakiyah Institute for the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (LF PBNU) issued a statement regarding predicting the start of fasting or 1 Ramadhan 1445 H.

They said that the start of the 2024 Ramadan fast will fall on March 12 2024. This prediction is based on observing the position of the new moon.

“God willing, fix 1 Ramadan 1445 H to coincide with 12 March 2024,” said LF PBNU Chairman Sirril Wafa, as reported by NU Online, Friday (29/2/2024).

The practice of the position of the new moon or rukyatul new moon at the beginning of Ramadan will be carried out on 29 Shaban 1445 H or Sunday, March 10 2024. Kiai Sirril said that the new moon will not be visible on that day either in terms of its height or elongation.

“For the start of Ramadan this year, taking into account the position of the crescent moon, both its height and elongation, in terms of experience or tajribah, it is impossible to rukyat the crescent moon on Sunday afternoon, March 10,” he said.

Furthermore, Kiai Sirril said that Syaban’s ikmal or istikmal steps as written in the PBNU almanac were correct.

The results of PBNU’s LF astronomy calculation show that the height of the hilal is 0 degrees 11 minutes 25 seconds on March 10 2024. Meanwhile, ijtima or conjunction occurred in the afternoon, namely, at 16:00:50 WIB.

Meanwhile, the location of the setting sun is at a position of 3 degrees 55 minutes 36 seconds south of the west point, while the location of the crescent moon is at a position of 5 degrees 7 minutes 23 seconds south of the west point. The position of the crescent moon is at 1 degree 11 minutes 27 seconds south of the sun, tilted to the south with an elongation of 2 degrees 30 minutes 25 seconds.

Kiai Sirril said that the results of these calculations would be proven through rukyatul hilal carried out simultaneously by regional LF NU at 50-60 points in various regions of Indonesia. Including the coastline that faces west as well as tall buildings with an unobstructed western horizon.

The rukyatul hilal process is said to be carried out together with a number of related parties such as officials from the local Ministry of Religion, Religious Courts, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and the community.

Why is the beginning of the month of Ramadan in Indonesia often different?

In Indonesia, differences in the beginning of the month, in this case 1 Ramadhan, have become commonplace. This has happened several times, some Muslims in Indonesia have fasted while others have not. This also happens when determining the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

For example, during the Ramadan fast in 2022/1443 H. There are Muslims who have fasted on April 2 2022. Meanwhile, the government has determined that the start of the new fast will be the following day, April 3 2022.

Quoted from the official website of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, the different beginnings of fasting occurred because of differences in understanding the text (dalil) and the method of taking the law (istinbath). But please note, this is a common thing that happens.

Will 1 Ramadan 2024 or 1445 Hijri this year be different? It’s still not certain.
