The US State Department announced that unless sanctions are lifted through diplomatic procedures, all sanctions imposed on Iran will continue to be effective.

The US State Department stated that, despite this, Washington is open to completing negotiations with Iran and expressed the hope that “the Lacey government will work towards advancing the negotiations.”

The Wall Street Journal quoted US officials as saying that Washington is considering severe sanctions on Iran’s oil sales to China to urge Tehran to complete the nuclear agreement.

The newspaper added that Washington is studying its available options to urge Iran to continue negotiations. If Tehran does not do so, the United States may punish Iran.

According to the Wall Street Journal, one of the options being considered is to impose new sanctions on shipping networks that help export Iranian oil.

Freeze negotiations

On the other hand, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi said that waiting for the inauguration of the new Tehran government in August will lead to a freeze in negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue, leaving his organization “uncomfortable.” The situation.

During his visit to Brazil, Grossi said in an interview with Agence France-Presse in Rio de Janeiro: “We seek clarification with Iran on a series of issues, and we will have to wait for the resumption of (talks) with the new government.”

The director-general also added, “This is a disturbing situation, at least for our organization. I don’t know the others (the parties involved in the negotiations) (what is the situation), but I think they are more willing to negotiate and Not waiting.”

Grossi believes that the prospects are not clear, but emphasized that to “maintain optimism (…) we must wait. Once the new government can seriously cooperate with us, we must start (negotiations) as soon as possible.”

transitional phase

On Saturday, Iran’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araghci announced that it would not resume the Vienna negotiations aimed at saving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal before August.

According to the news agency of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Araghci said in a tweet, “We are now in a transitional phase, and Tehran is currently undergoing a democratic transition of power.”

Abbas Aragec also added, “It is clear that the Vienna negotiations should await the new Iranian government, which is a necessary condition for any democracy.”

It is expected that the President-elect of Iran, Lacey, will be sworn in before the Shura Committee on August 5.

Parallel dialogue

Grossi explained that despite the suspension of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program in Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency is in a “parallel” dialogue with Tehran on inspections and access to facilities that were subject to “significant restrictions” in February.

He said, “Iran is responsible for the agency. They cannot simply say’we stopped’ (inspection work). They may do this, but it will be problematic.”

Grossi talked about the installation of surveillance cameras on some nuclear facilities by the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran has postponed the submission of these records to the IAEA since February.

The director-general said: “We have information that the recording will not be deleted, but since the expiration of the agreement reached with Iran on June 24, we rely on verbal assurances and things are extremely fragile.”

Iran and world powers began negotiations in April to save the international agreement on the Iranian nuclear agreement reached in 2015.

The United States withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement in 2018 during the period of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021). Since then, the agreement has been faltering. Trump re-imposed sanctions on Iran. Tehran responded to this. Stop fulfilling most of the obligations stipulated in the Iran nuclear agreement.

The agreement reached in Vienna lifted Western and United Nations sanctions on Tehran in exchange for Iran’s promise not to acquire atomic weapons and drastically cut its nuclear program, which is subject to very strict inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
