After four months of protests, silenced by harsh repression, the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, attempts a gesture of “reconciliation” by offering amnesty to some detainees – “thousands” state media say – including many demonstrators arrested since September. But on one condition: that they admit they have committed crimes and repent by promising never to return to the streets.
