Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdullahian held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on bilateral relations and the development of the region.

According to a statement from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two discussed on Saturday ways to further promote bilateral economic and political relations, as well as the latest developments in Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen and Iraq.

Amirabdorahian said that the diplomatic atmosphere of the UN General Assembly last month showed that “the situation has changed in favor of Syria.”

Senior Taliban officials and U.S. representatives held talks in Qatar on Saturday. Iran did not attend because of the U.S. presence. The Iranian Foreign Minister also stated that Iran “is in contact with all parties in Afghanistan, including the Taliban,” and continues to call on them to form an inclusive government.

According to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Assad stated that recent developments in Syria, including the presidential election that allowed him to be re-elected, and the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, marked the “rise of the new axis and the collapse of the Western axis”.

The Iranian Foreign Minister further told the Syrian President that the government of Tehran President Ibrahim Leahy envisages a “sustainable economic development plan” that will be implemented regardless of whether US sanctions still exist.

The United States unilaterally abandoned the agreement in 2018, and Iran insists that Europe is also an accomplice, abiding by US sanctions, and sometimes even hindering humanitarian trade.

This is the third leg of Amirabdorahian’s visit to Russia and Lebanon for high-level talks.

On Wednesday, he met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow and said that as the two countries are considering a road map for long-term cooperation, Iran hopes a “great leap” in relations between the two countries.

During the two-day trip to Lebanon, he met with President Michel Aoun and senior officials of the newly formed government, and expressed Iran’s commitment to supporting Lebanon in breaking the “unjust siege” it faces under the pressure of US sanctions.

Amirabdorahian also held talks with the Lebanese Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah and the leaders of the Palestinian resistance movement.
