Joe Biden believes that ceasefire between Israel and Hamas can come into effect next week

President Joe Biden expressed his hope for a ceasefire to be implemented between Israel and Hamas early next week during his visit to New York City. Biden made the comments while enjoying an ice cream cone with television host Seth Meyers.

Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, had previously mentioned that the United States, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar were close to reaching an agreement on the terms of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The negotiations also involve the exchange of hostages in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners.

Protesters gathered at Rockefeller Center to demand an end to the conflict in Gaza and the release of hostages. Meanwhile, ongoing talks in Doha between various parties, including Hamas and Israel, have reportedly made significant progress towards reaching a deal on prisoner exchanges and a potential ceasefire.

Sources close to the negotiations revealed that Hamas has backed down on its demand for a permanent ceasefire, instead opting for a six-week truce to allow for further discussions on ending the conflict. Israel is said to be showing more flexibility on the release of Palestinian prisoners.

The Doha meetings, led by experts and senior security officials, are focused on addressing various issues, including the reconstruction of Gaza and the establishment of camps for displaced residents. Previous ceasefire agreements have been short-lived, with only one week of peace achieved in late November.

As the talks continue, there is cautious optimism that a ceasefire agreement may be reached in the coming days, bringing relief to the war-torn region.
