Jordan, the king speaks on TV: “The crisis is over”

by admin

AMMAN – “I assure you that the crisis is over”: thus the Jordanian king, Abdallah II, speaking to the country for the first time about the plot orchestrated by his stepbrother, the principe Hamza. On Saturday several people were arrested and the prince was ordered to remain in his home. The emergency returned on Monday, thanks to the mediation of his uncle Hassan, with the declaration of loyalty to King Abdallah II signed by Hamza. “I assure you that the sedition was nipped in the bud,” said the Jordanian monarch, in a statement on TV read to the nation in his name. “The challenge of recent days has not been the most dangerous for the stability of the country, but for me it was the most painful”, he added.

The fate of the prince is still shrouded in mystery: on Saturday he had released a video in which he explained that he had been ordered to cut off communications with the world. And family members of other arrested people said they have had no contact with the detainees and have no idea where they are. The king limited himself to letting it be known that he is in the “custody” of the sovereign himself and that an “investigation” is underway on what has happened in recent days.

“Our country – concluded the king – must face economic challenges exacerbated by the pandemic and we are well aware of the weight and difficulties that our citizens have to face. But we will measure ourselves with them and with the other challenges, as always, united”. The president of the European Commission made a surprise visit to Jordan today Ursula von der Leyen, returning from the trip to Istanbul where he met the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reaffirming Brussels’ support for the Haschemite monarchy and its sovereign.
