Kenya, five elephants killed in two fires caused by British soldiers

by admin

A British soldier inadvertently started a nasty fire in the hills of Laikipia in northern Kenya by lighting a fire on Wednesday evening to cook in the Lolldaiga camp, where the UK army is training. Four elephants are almost certainly dead. It was reported on Daily Mail. A week ago, also in this area, another English fire killed a baby elephant

The pachyderms would have been trapped by the flames in the area surrounded by the electric fence, created specifically to prevent animals from entering the training area. The latest fire is still devastating the 3,200 hectares of Lolldaiga. Hundreds of British military and Kenya Authority Wildlife rangers are hard at work to try to contain the damage and stop the flames.

The baby elephant that died a week ago was stranded after a British Army soldier set fire to the bush to ward off a family of pachyderms. The little one did not make it to escape and died.

The military announced that an investigation into both incidents had been opened but made no comment on what happened. In Kenya there are over a thousand soldiers stationed in the north, engaged in training Kenyan colleagues (Batuk).
