The old Cumbre volcano on the island of La Palma in Spain recently erupted violently. At present, the local airport has been completely closed. The only way to get in and out of the island is by ferry, and a large number of people evacuated urgently.

A reporter from Xinhua News Agency saw that thicker and thicker black smoke and loud noises appeared in the crater on the morning of the 24th, and sound waves shook doors and windows more than ten kilometers away. At noon that day, the crater began to spew out a lot of gas. Tensions have also emerged in some villages that have not been affected before. Residents have begun to pack their things and leave their homes in advance. More and more police cars have appeared on the roads. More villages have also begun martial law and evacuated residents. Later that day, geologists at the Canary Volcano Institute confirmed that two new eruptions had appeared on the northwest side of the old Cumbre crater. The huge pressure caused the cone of the volcano to rupture, and hot magma flowed toward the sea at a speed of 40 meters per second.

There is a thick layer of black dust from the eruption on the ground a few kilometers away from the crater. Martina, who lives in the village of El Paso, told reporters that she cleans the volcanic ash every day, from the roof to the yard and even the leaves are covered with dust. Each cleaning takes at least 4 hours.

In view of the fact that La Palma Airport has been closed due to the impact of volcanic ash, the only means of transportation on the island to communicate with the outside world is ferry, and tourists or residents stranded on the island can only leave by ferry. It is reported that the two ferry companies have increased the ferry frequency on the original basis, but there are still long queues at the ferry terminal.

La Palma is a volcanic island located in the northwestern part of the Canary Islands in Spain. It covers an area of 708 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 83,000. There have been 7 volcanic eruptions on the island since records, the most recent of which occurred in 1971.

According to data from the authority on the evening of the 25th, since the eruption of the volcano began on the 19th, the erupted lava has covered 212.1 hectares of land on the island and destroyed more than 400 houses and buildings.
