ROMA – Libya, regional balances and relations between Italy and the United Arab Emirates, not always easy in recent months. The topics at the center of the telephone conversation between the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The news of the interview came from a press release from Palazzo Chigi which specified how the exchange of views focused on bilateral collaboration also in the perspective of a possible further strengthening and on the main regional dossiers, with particular regard to the situation in Libya.

The crisis

In recent months, relations between the two countries had become tense following the embargo adopted in January against the export of arms to Saudi Arabia and the Emirates. In the summer, however, a move shared by Palazzo Chigi, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs effectively lifted the freeze. A choice also dictated by the reaction of the Emiratis who had responded to the choice of Rome by canceling commercial contracts with Italy and starting a series of political retaliations. Including the closure of the access for the Italian Defense to the Al Minhad air base: the Emirate airport has been used for years by the Italian Air Force for supplies and logistical transfers to Afghanistan and Kuwait.
