Libya, former US diplomat Williams appointed UN “special adviser”

In a surprise move, the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres named the former American diplomat Stephanie Williams his “special adviser” to follow the mediation work in Libya and prepare the elections on December 24th.

Guterres’ move is particular, because the UN secretary has decided not to replace the resigned for the moment Jan Cabbage, “special envoy” approved by the Security Council, with an official who had the same formal status as the former Slovak minister.
