O Los Angeles Lakers revealed this Thursday the first of three statues which will be placed in honor of Kobe Bryant outside his Crypto.com Arena stadium, in an event organized four years after the death of the iconic franchise player. In the sculpture, Bryant wears the Lakers uniform with the number 8 and points to the sky with his right index finger, a gesture he made after breaking the scoring record with 81 points against the Raptors in 2006.

Engraved on the base of the figure are the player’s name, his nickname “Black Mamba” and some of the extraordinary brands that Bryant achieved throughout his two-decade career with the uniform of Lakersincluding five championship titles.

“Kobe chose the pose you’re going to see. If you have a problem with that, tough luck,” Vanessa Bryant, the legendary basketball player’s widow, said at the ceremony, revealing that there will be three statues in total honoring Kobe.

In another of the figures, Bryant will appear wearing number 24, the one he wore during the second part of his career, and in the third he will be with his daughter Gianna. Kobe and her, a talented 13-year-old basketball player, died along with seven other people in a helicopter crash that occurred on January 26, 2020, northwest of Los Angeles (California), and that shook the world of sports.

The Lakers chose February 8, 2024 for this honor because it is the date that includes Kobe’s (8 and 24) and Gianna’s (2) uniform numbers.

The ceremony, which took place under a huge tent with a few dozen participants, was attended by other Lakers legends who also have statues in the Star Plaza in front of the stadium, such as Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, in addition of Bryant’s former teammates such as Spaniard Pau Gasol.

Under the command of their current star, LeBron James, the Lakers faced the Denver Nuggets, current NBA champion, that night at the same Crypto.com Arena.
