The president of Mali Assimi Goita he escaped a stabbing attempt while he was at the Great Mosque of Bamako to participate in the celebrations of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
According to the first reconstructions cited by the French broadcaster BfmTv, the two assailants would have tried to hit him without success, instead injuring another person who is not in danger of life. Goita was sworn in on 7 June as president of the Transition after conducting a coup d’état that led to the removal of the then interim leader on 25 May Bah Ndaw and its prime minister, Moctar Ouane, also authors of the coup that ousted the president in August 2020 Ibrahim Boubakar Keita.

Mali has suffered a series of coups in recent years following the destabilization of the country which began in 2012 with the dismissal of the president Amadou Toumani Tourè. The intervention of French troops in 2013 prevented jihadist groups from reaching the capital Bamako. Following the ousting of the last legitimate president, Boubacar Keita, under international pressure, the military decided to appoint a transitional president and return power to civilians within 18 months. But last May the colonels arrested the president and the prime minister after the appointment of a new transitional government not to their liking, imposing Goita as the interim head of state. The colonel had led the two coups of August 2020 and last May.
