BERLINO – Friedrich Merz is the new president of the CDU. The congress of German conservatives voted him with an overwhelming 94.62% of the vote. In his speech to the delegates, Merz promised a “rebirth” of the party but recalled the “heavy defeat in the elections” of 2021, where the CDU / Csu collected 24%, the worst result ever, warning that the return to government of the country “could be a long way”.
