TRIPOLI. The European Union has called for the exit of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya, describing it as a “precondition” for a return to stability in the war-torn country. In a press conference in Tripoli, EU Council President Charles Michel described the appointment of a transitional government earlier this year as a “historic moment”. The government aims to lead the country until the general elections on December 24th.
“An opportunity has been created to rebuild the country, but there is a precondition: all fighters and foreign troops must leave the country,” he said, urging political factions, mostly armed, to seize “a ‘ unique opportunity to build a united, stable and prosperous, sovereign country ». Michel, who met with the leaders of the newly appointed government, reiterated that the EU is supporting efforts for national reconciliation.
