PARIS – Michel Barnier also officially takes the field for the French right in view of the presidential elections. The former EU Brexit negotiator announced it on TV TF1 and with an interview with Le Figaro. In the primaries of his party, Les Républicains, the formation founded in 2015 by Nicolas sarkozy, will have to contend with three rivals: the president of the Île-de-France region Valerie Pécresse, the mayor of La Garenne-Colombes Philippe Juvin and the deputy Eric Ciotti, while the favorite Xavier Bertrand, president of the Hauts-de-France, who left the party in 2017 but belongs to the same area, does not lend himself to the primaries and goes on his own.
