“Hamas it has appropriated the Palestinian cause by snatching it from Abu Mazen, but I don’t think the “secular” alternative is Al Fatah“, says the French orientalist and political scientist Olivier Roy, who teaches at the European University Institute of Fiesole. “The nightmare of Hamas is that the Palestinian population becomes autonomous by freeing itself from its control, with the younger generations rejecting political parties and fighting for their civil rights”.
