The number of migrants who have managed to cross the border between Morocco and Spain in Ceuta has risen to about 3,000 since last night alone. This is a record figure for this Spanish city located on the North African coast. This was reported by various media, which also speak of a person who died during the swim crossing.
Ceuta therefore faces an unprecedented situation in terms of the number of arrivals of migrants in a few hours, explain the Iberian media: the first who have so far managed to overcome the barriers at the border – by swimming or running – arrived in the middle of the night, then they other groups followed in the following hours. At least 300 could be minors.
The reception services for migrants in the city are complete. According to information arriving from the area, the Moroccan gendarmerie is not intervening to stop the migrants before they attempt the crossing. This incident occurs as Spain and Morocco face diplomatic tensions after Brahim Gali, leader of the Frente Polisario independence movement, was hospitalized in a Spanish hospital. Arancha González, Iberian foreign minister, ruled out that the two facts are linked, according to the Efe news agency.
