by admin

A shipwreck occurred off the coast of Tunisia causing the death of dozens of migrants. This was reported today by the Tunisian radio station “Mosaique Fm”, explaining that the units of the Coast Guard, aided by fishing boats, managed to save three people: a man and two women from the Ivory Coast and Guinea.

The boat capsized off Sidi Mansour during an illegal migration attempt to the coast of Italy. So far 41 bodies have been recovered and transferred to the Habib Bourguiba hospital morgue in Sfax. The searches at sea are continuing while an investigation has been launched by order of the public prosecutor.

According to data from the Interior Ministry, illegal migratory flows by sea along the central Mediterranean route increased by 164.08 percent in 2021: from 3,227 to 8,522 sea arrivals on the morning of April 16. The route does not only concern Tunisia, but also Libya and Algeria. Tunisians lead the ranking of nationalities declared at the landing with 1,250 arrivals, ahead of 1,192 Ivorians, 931 Bengalis, 612 Guineans, 559 Sudanese, 452 Egyptians, 447 milians, 436 Eritreans, 336 Moroccans and 320 Algerians (for another 1,797 people are still in identification activities underway).
