Mlrs and M142: the new long-range missiles that the US would like to give to Kiev

The military conflict could be at a tipping point. If they find confirmation of the indiscretions launched by the CNN, according to which the administration Biden would be preparing to upgrade the type of weapons to be supplied to theUkraine sending advanced long-range missile systems would likely enter a new phase of this war. A phase whose epilogues would leave many more uncertainties, which are the same ones that up to now have slowed down every decision of the White House.

The new rocket launchers

The United States would be ready to supply new weapons to the Ukrainian army. These include long-range rocket launchers mrs they M142 Himars. These are weapons that have not yet entered this conflict, superior in firepower, range and mobility even to those used by the Russians. These are rocket launchers capable of detonating massive firepower (therefore multiple rockets at the same time) at distances 10 times longer than current armaments.

Both the Mlrs and the M142 Himars (very similar, except that the former are tracked while the latter are mounted on rubber), have a range of 300 kilometers. Potentially, therefore, Ukraine would be in a position to hit Russian targets within Russian territory.

Low-range missiles

Currently the Ukrainian army is defending itself with low-range weapons: Javelin anti-tank missiles, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, Howitzer M777. Devices capable of hitting short range targets (20-25 km). And this clearly benefits the Russian army, which thanks to more effective rocket launchers – with a range of about 50 km – are able to attack from more distant positions without running too many risks of counterattack.

With the Mlrs and M142s the dynamics would change considerably. The Kiev army would not only be able to hit the Russians from a considerable distance, but also immediately move its rocket launchers (thanks to the very agile mobility of these weapons) to avoid being hit. The Russian conventional artillery, in this case, could be much more reluctant to approach the Ukrainian urban centers with the Mlrs systems in place. And that would require changes in their siege tactics.
