Molde FK, Conference League | Molde messed up a very strong starting point against Legia: – Doesn’t feel like a victory

That means a slightly complicated starting point for Molde in the return match in Poland next week. Legia Warszawa is a very strong home team and beat Aston Villa, AZ and Zrinjski Mostar on their own turf in the group stage.

– It’s really sad. It doesn’t feel like a victory here and now, said Molde back Kristoffer Haugen to Viaplay after the 3-2 triumph.

It could have looked so much better for Erling Moe’s men. Halfway through, Molde looked to be steering towards a clear home victory.

Two early scores by Fredrik Gulbrandsen laid the foundation for that. The Legia defense was “on their heels” in the opening, and the lead was increased when Markus Kaasa dribbled free and scored 3-0 after 23 minutes.

– I think we play very well. We are doing exactly what we have agreed and I think the boys are very, very ready. We let ourselves down a bit towards the end of the half, but when we have had a small break we will come out with the same pace in the second half, Gulbrandsen told Viaplay during the break.

Completely turned around

But it was Legia that would shock Molde from the start of the second half. Coach Kosta Runjaic made four substitutions, and the visitors went to work aggressively and hit with their pressure.

It resulted in two big chances quite quickly. Marco Burch was stopped by the shoulder of Eirik Haugan at a corner after 51 minutes, while Bartosz Kapustka sent a long-range shot onto the post shortly after.

The score was set for the visitors after 62 minutes. Anders Hagelskjær had a half-cleared cross, but Josue loaded his left leg for the return and knocked in 1-3 with a beautiful volley shot.

– We get a little cowardly in the second half. We start to hide and do not get the combinations we had in the beginning. Then we get a lot of bad fouls against us, which means they get a couple of unnecessary goals. We had this match in the palm of our hands. But we lead with one goal and have a good starting point, said Haugen.

Violent drive

Legia continued to run the game, and the Molde defense had problems again. After 70 minutes, Rafal Augustyniak swung in from the right, and Juergen Elitim poked the ball into the goal in a duel with Martin Linnes at the back post.

Molde involved the substitutes’ bench heavily in the attempt to contain Legia’s offensive. Strong players like Veton Berisha came in and helped to avoid several late goals.

This means that Molde takes a one-goal lead ahead of the decisive match in the conference league’s first cup round.
