“Technical failure strands 500 visitors on world‘s highest cable car on Valentine’s Day”

The Mérida Cable Car, the highest in the world, suffered a technical failure on the night of February 14, leaving more than 500 visitors stranded at the La Montaña station, more than 2,452 meters above sea level.

As reported by users through social networks, the incident occurred in the afternoon, when the cable car stopped in the first section that connects Barinitas with La Montaña. The visitors, many of them couples celebrating Valentine’s Day, had to wait in cold conditions until the cable car staff began the descent slowly and safely, following safety protocol.

The descent continues, with each trip taking 40 minutes, which has meant that some tourists have had to spend more than six hours at the station until they are fully evacuated. Some of them expressed their discomfort and disappointment over the bad experience that ruined their romantic day.

The Mukumbari Cable Car System authorities have not issued any official statement on the causes of the failure or the measures they will take to prevent its recurrence. Social media posts from stranded visitors demand the resignation of the manager of the cable car system.

The incident has sparked concern among the public and calls for accountability and improved safety measures for the world‘s highest cable car.
