Myanmar, army kills 80 protesters during protests in Bago

by admin

I am at least 80 victims of the clashes that took place on Friday in Myanmar. News of the latest bloodbath, the biggest to date, only leaked out after more than a day. The scene of the violent repression, carried out by the army against citizens who have been protesting for over two months now, is New, a city famous for its giant Buddha statues, 65 kilometers from Yangon. The Political Prisoner Assistance Association – a local monitoring group following the deaths – confirmed that “over 80 anti-coup protesters were killed by security forces in Bago on Friday.” Many people have been forced to flee to nearby villages, as well as numerous wounded who are in serious condition.

The Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military ousted the civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi February 1, with demonstrators refusing to submit to the junta and calling for a return to democracy. The country’s ambassador to the United Nations has called for “strong action” against the junta. It is estimated that the victims are more than 600 since the onset of internal tensions.

Over the past week, violent clashes have also occurred in the countries of Kalay e Fresh, in the north of the country. In both cases, there are eleven victims. The security forces are accused of making use of heavy weapons during their attacks, including rocket launchers and mortars. The majority of citizen protests instead take place under the banner of non-violence, although some groups have begun to make use of incendiary bombs. In the city of Kalay a group of activists have called themselves the “civil army” and use rudimentary hunting rifles. The military junta has released a list of 140 wanted people that includes artists and journalists accused of spreading destabilizing news. Nineteen people (including 17 fugitives) were sentenced to death for the killing of an army officer in Yangon on March 27.
