BANGKOK – On February 1, 2021, the light of dawn had not yet risen over the Land of the Golden Pagodas when the comet of democracy that had crossed the skies of Myanmar for a decade stopped shining. Millions of Burmese and ethnic peoples had seen the prospect of a freer and easier life in at least virtual contact with the rest of the world light up almost suddenly, and for this they were willing to accept the advice of “Mother Suu”, the Nobel Aung San Suu Kyi, to forget the past and work free of fear to build a future of peace and reconciliation.
