New outbreaks in China, the Beijing Marathon canceled after the Wuhan one

Beijing marathon on October 31 canceled due to new Covid outbreaks in the country. It is the second mass sporting event that China postpones to a later date. The Wuhan marathon was also canceled a few days before the start. Two demonstrations which, together, would have involved more than 50,000 people.

Concern about new outbreaks is growing in the country, just over 100 days before the start of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The National Health Commission reported, in its daily updates, that another 35 domestic-transmitted infections were detected yesterday.

In view of the Games, the Chinese authorities have chosen an uncompromising approach towards new cases, opting for the utmost caution in order to contain infections within a value close to zero.

The recovery of the cases, which began about 10 days ago, is linked to a group of tourists who were in Shanghai before flying to Xi’an, Gansu and then to Inner Mongolia.

With the latest tourism-related clusters across the country, authorities yesterday announced the suspension of interprovincial tourism groups in five areas where cases have been detected, including Beijing. Some cities, such as Lanzhou, and parts of Inner Mongolia have suspended bus and taxi services and closed tourist sites. The recent spate of internal infections involves a strain of the Delta variant, according to Chinese health officials.
