New York: Adams has an advantage among the Democrats in the primaries

by admin

Polls closed to identify the two main candidates for mayors of New York, that of the Democrats (who start favorites) and that of the Republicans. The first ballots give the advantage among the dem Eric Adams, while in the Grand Old Party the activist and radio host Curtis Sliwa sees victory.

But it will take a long time to know how the Democrats’ primary will end. There are 13 candidates in the running but the real race is between four: Eric Adams, former policeman and president of the Brooklyn City Hall, the former cadidade for the presidency Andrew Yang, the former Commissioner for Health Kathryn Garcia and the progressive Maya Wiley, supported by liberal star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The result could take several days, due to the new and complicated primary system, which requires voters to name up to five candidates in order of preference: unless one reaches the 50% threshold (unlikely scenario), the candidate who arrives last is eliminated and the votes of his supporters are redistributed to their second choice, and so on, until a quorum is reached.

The very first screenings, however, reward the favorite Adams, which is in the lead after just 8% of the cards with the 28,8% preferences, followed by Garcia to 23.9% and from Wiley (at 21.3%). Detached in fourth place, for now, That to 11.8%. All other candidates are below 6%. Adams has a strong lead in all City Halls except Manhattan.

All the spotlights are naturally on the Democratic primaries in the most populous city in America, the bastion of progressivism, led in the last 8 years by the Italian-American Bill de Blasio, but also the Republicans must pay their nomination: the choice was between ‘business owner Fernando Mateo and the activist (founder of the Guardian Angels) and radio host Curtis Sliwa. According to media projections, Sliwa has the victory in his pocket. Most likely, therefore, he will be the one to challenge the winner of the Democratic primaries next November.
