New Zealand wants its Maori name back: call it “Aotearoa”

by admin

LONDON – Call it “Aotearoa”. It is the original name in the Maori language of the nation now known as New Zealand and now the party representing the Polynesian minority of the population has launched a petition to change it. “Aotearoa is a name that will unify this country rather than divide it,” says Rawiri Waititi, leader of Te Pati Maori. New Zealand is a Dutch name, but this land is part of Polynesia.
