Nigeria, mystery about the death of the leader of Boko Haram

by admin

In Nigeria, the news is given for certain: Abubakar Shekau, leader of the jihadist group Boko Haram, was killed in a clash between his men and fighters from the West African province of the Islamic State (Iswap) in the Sambisa forest.

Sources close to the French secret services, on the other hand, reported that today Skhekau was seriously injured in north-eastern Nigeria during an attempted kidnapping by rival terrorists linked to ISIS. According to a first source, he tried to commit suicide in the Sambisa forest, his stronghold, rather than falling into their hands. “Shekau shot himself in the chest, and the bullet went through his shoulder,” he told AFP. The other source, however, claimed that his serious condition was the result of an explosive charge he had activated while taking refuge in a house.

The terrorist found himself surrounded, along with some of his men, after a series of battles against rival jihadists of the Iswap group. According to one of the sources, some of the remaining Boko Haram members still managed to escape, taking their severely wounded leader with them.

Official news is awaited. What is certain is that ISWAP, an ISIS-backed Boko Haram splinter group, would grow in terms of membership, influence and large-caliber weapons. According to local media, he is operating in the territories around Lake Chad and, after the deadly assault on Shekau, controls some portions of the Sambisa forest.
