US intelligence estimates that North Korea may be on the verge of preparing a missile test. This would be the first launch since Joe Biden took office, after weeks of silence about American attempts to make contact. CNN reports it.
The alarm was raised by Air Force General Glen VanHerck, head of the army’s northern command, that Pyongyang could begin testing an improved version of its ICBM “in the near future”. In a written testimony to the Senate Armed Forces Committee, VanHerk said North Korea’s “considerably larger and presumably more capable” ICBMs will further increase the threat to the US but that it trusts in the US missile defense system. The senior official recalled that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un disengaged himself over a year ago from the unilateral moratorium on nuclear and missile tests announced in 2018.
