Northern Ireland premier resigns

by admin

Political crisis in Northern Ireland due to the resignation of Arlena Foster as leader of the largest local unionist party, Dup, and as First Minister of the Belfast regional government. Foster announced the step backwards in a statement, after parliamentary groups from her own party yesterday began collecting signatures to discourage her along with her deputy Nigel Dodds. She explained that a new leader will be elected within “a few weeks”, ensuring that she “wants to work” with whoever succeeds her.
“Serving the people of Northern Ireland has been the privilege of my life,” Foster said on TV. “I have tried to lead the party and Northern Ireland away from division and towards a better path.” The unionist leader will leave her post in the party on May 28 and the leadership of the executive at the end of June.
